In the past few years, numerous games have managed to become a cultural phenomenon, simply through their unique ideas and gameplay. Games like Angry Birds or Cut the Rope are a great example, but while those are very colorful and specifically targeting kids, Five Nights at Freddy’s is a breed of its own.
At its core, Five Nights at Freddy’s is a scary game, so scary in fact that the whole emphasis of the title relies on horror and jump-scares. But, oddly enough, you also tend to feel for the automatons as you play, which is very interesting to say the least.
In all 3 installments of this fun game, we had the opportunity to encounter a wide range of funny, cute yet horribly frightening characters. The creepy cast including Freddy, Chica, Bonnie, marionette, and more. You do feel for these characters and their back story. The fact that they come to life and try to get you, just adds to their mystery and lure among fans.
But what drove Five Nights at Freddy’s towards a massive success is the YouTube population, like people that have played the game, showing their funny reactions on screen. Not to mention the countless Gary’s mod FNAF videos. All generating a massive culture based on the game. The game has thousands of clones, and it has underground merchandise line you can find on Amazon. There’s also a massive amount of wonderful FNAF fan art and fan fiction out there (and some urban legends associated with it).
While the only official releases are the 3 games and a movie that is currently in the works, the game has found a following even with kids not old enough to play it, thanks to the Freddy, Chica, Marionette, amongst many others. Kids see the appearance of these puppets as being frightfully interesting.
Of course, Five Nights at Freddy’s is a game series mostly for adults due to the high amount of scare and pressure it comes with. The game can also be funny and has a dark sense of humor to it. The monster/animatronic design is nothing short of spectacular, and each character has managed to bring in an appeal of its own.
The game did come out of nowhere, but in the end it’s one of the most interesting and definitely an iconic title of the last few years, Bringing app based games up a notch, like other indie games that have managed to obtain overnight popularity.
We do hope that Five Nights at Freddy’s will bring in its official plush line soon, because these characters are indeed very popular amongst fans! For the time being, the developer is hard at work on a fourth and final installment that will be released very soon, which is set to close the Five Nights at Freddy’s saga. Will this be the end? It’s hard to say, but one thing is certain, this series has allowed us to see horror games from a different perspective, one that combines both humor and real scares in a stellar way!
